Welcome to our new practice! We are so pleased to be bringing a private medical setting for genetic counseling to our community. Our genetic specialists are well equipped to discuss family history of cancers and the potential risk factors involved for family members. Often genetic testing is indicated to determine the actual level of risk for developing an inherited cancer and our specialists work with their patients through that process as well.
The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 54,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in North Carolina in 2016. When you consider that 5-10% (2700 – 5400) of those will be from an inherited gene mutation (inherited cancer syndrome), you realize how very important it is to be aware of your family’s cancer history. With genetic counseling and testing, when appropriate, it is very possible to prevent many of those inherited cancers from occurring. There are many ways to manage the risks for patients with an inherited gene mutation, ranging from enhanced surveillance to preventative surgery.
Knowing if you have inherited a mutation that increases your risk for developing a cancer allows you to be proactive in maintaining your health. Because these mutations are passed down from parent to child, your counseling and potential testing can also provide information about other direct family members. Genetic knowledge is empowering for families!
As was said by Rovenia M. Brock, Ph.D., “You can’t change your genes, but you can change your lifestyle and, in turn, reduce your risk factors. Family (medical) history doesn’t have to be your destiny.”
