Sadly, it seems that every month of the year is designated as an awareness month for some form of Cancer. November is awareness month for: Lung, Pancreatic and Neuroendocrine Tumor Day.
Each awareness month is valuable in reminding people that much research is happening and needs to happen to defeat these cancers. It is also an important reminder that there are many cancers and that as individuals, we can do some things to mitigate our risks of getting various forms of cancer.
All cancers have a genetic mutation that is causal. Some of these mutations are actually inherited and “run in families”. Knowing if you have an inherited genetic predisposition for a specific cancer or cluster of cancers allows you to take charge of your health and work to reduce the chances of being diagnosed with cancer.
The first step in determining whether you have a family history that would predispose you to certain cancers is to complete the Family History Tool. If this shows any indication that you are possibly at increased risk, then an appointment with a genetic counselor is the next step. A full assessment of your risks may result in a referral for genetic testing or may show that your risk does not meet that level.
Hereditary Care Center works with male and female patients to help them to determine their inherited genetic risks and the best ways to deal with that information. Knowing your cancer risks can help to save the lives of you and your loved ones.
