The American Institute for Cancer Research, AICR, estimates that 1 in 3 cancers could be prevented by eating healthy, exercising and keeping your Body Mass Index, BMI, under control. Knowing if you are genetically predisposed to certain cancers gives you the best chance to use preventive measures to assure you remain cancer-free.
February is Cancer Prevention Month and this is a great time to assess your cancer risks and take preventive measures to diminish your risks. Genetic counseling and possibly testing, involving a thorough family health history analysis, can help you to know what steps to take to prevent several cancers; including breast, ovarian, colorectal, endometrial (uterine) and prostate. Completing the hereditary cancer quiz, is the place to start your path to determining whether you have elevated genetic cancer risk. Once a genetic counselor analyzes this information for you, they can then help you decide whether genetic testing is the proper next step for you. If it is determined that you do have a genetic disposition to certain cancers, your genetic counselor will recommend a personalized cancer screening and prevention plan, based on published medical guidelines.
Knowing if you have a genetic predisposition to certain cancers can help you to make the best choices to prevent a diagnosis of cancer. Make February the month you evaluate your family history and take action to remain healthy.
